If you're going to be at the San Diego Comic Con on Sunday, July 20th, I'll be moderating a panel called "Women on the Verge" tentatively featuring comic creators Laurenn McCubbin, Janet Harvey, Ariel Schrag, Colleen Coover, Christine Norrie and Amanda Conner. The panel will be held from 1:30 - 3:00pm. I don't have the location just yet, but I'll post it as soon as I do.
We've described the panel as "focusing on XX (and sometimes XXX) creators whose career paradigms have been 'if you build it, they will come'; women who tut-tut conventional wisdom about girls' comics and what the market will support and do their own work anyway; women who may have been surprised to find themselves with an audience and a burgeoning career doing what they love to do. We're not planning a whine and cheese party or a focus group on what's wrong with gender stereotyping in comics. The panel will discuss what they do and why; where they look (in comics and elsewhere) for role models and creative inspiration; and whether or not they would produce the same work in a vacuum (the Emily Dickinson effect: how would your product be different if it were never intended for public consumption/marketing was not a concern?)." We'll talk about what it means to be "on the verge," and how to manage crisis and change from the perspective of 7 women, each at a very different point in her career.
Despite appearances to the contrary, it should be fun.
