Fundraising Goal? MET.
...and then some!
I'm at 104%, folks. You're AMAZING and I thank you most humbly.
TOTAL DONATIONS COLLECTED: $3,840
GOAL: $3,700
Laurenn has not met her goal yet, so if you're still thinking of donating to support our efforts for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, please do so on Laurenn's page - use this link. It says her goal is $3200, but that's a technical glitch. She has to raise $3700, too.
If it helps, Friday night we were both up working until after midnight. And yet, Saturday morning we were up at 5am, at Roe park by 6am and by 8am we were in the car, dripping sweat and marvelling at the fact that we'd just run 8 MILES. (Take that, EMINEM!) I had a panic attack at about mile six. I couldn't breathe and I was TERRIFIED that I was somehow going to drown standing up. Coach Jen let me walk and cry and catch my breath for a minute and a half, then I had to get back at it. Once I'd recomposed myself she gave me a hug and told me I'd just had break-through. "No," I explained. "That was a breakDOWN." Anyway, I lived and I love Coach Jen. I should send her flowers or something.
As soon as I can stand upright again, I'll get right on that.

Jiggity-Jig
Home again, home again, blah blah blah.
I have a zillion Nerd Prom Post Mortem notes I want to post, but no time right now.
I'll start with regrets: I saw Megan, Lorna, Steve and Jon NOT AT ALL. Either they were avoiding me (perish the thought) or I picked the wrong two nights to go to bed early.
Wah.
(Megan's photos are amazing!)

95%

TOTAL DONATIONS COLLECTED: $3,520
GOAL: $3,700
So! Close!
Laurenn and I have worked out every day we've been at the con. Tomorrow? Getting up early to swim a quarter mile and weight train. Then the Con.
Fraction says we are superheroes.

Happy Birthday to Me!
Eee!
Fraction woke me up this morning with presents wrapped in t-shirts! All is well with the world. (I got an ipod mini for running with! Much better than the used brown belt he promised.)
Swam a quarter mile + with Laurenn and I am about to hop in the shower, make a few notes and head to the Con.
Having dinner with J. Lu and his beloved tonight, I believe then the plan had been to hang out back of the Hyatt. Apparently there is no "out back of the Hyatt" anymore, so we'll be in the bar downstairs. I'm vaguely bummed about this but Laurenn and Fraction assure me it's swell. (I turned into a pumpkin last night and missed the SDCC inaugural hang-out. Fraction says I'm a superhero whose secret weakness is midnight. Guess that's not a secred anymore, huh?)
Anyway. Dinner with Rick Remender and crew was swell last night. That boy's a hoot. More name dropping later but Ivan Brandon? AWESOME. Looking forward to reading his book.
Okay. Shower now.
Spitting and in dire need of a leg shave, I remain,
Yours,
Kelly Soup
PS: Jayanthi~ yes! Lists! PLEASE!! For my birthday, I would like a list.

Miscellany and the Nerd Prom
*** Leaving for The Nerd Prom tomorrow morning - woo hoo! Been so busy the last few weeks I haven't really had a chance to ask who all's going to be there, etc. If you see me (I'm hard to miss, though the hair is not the same shocking red that it used to be), please say hello. I don't bite and I carry a generous supply of hand sanitizer, so it's cool. In fact, I'll probably share my hand sanitizer with you if you ask nicely. (Don't laugh; this is Comic Con. I'd carry Fabreeze if I thought I could get away with random spritzings of well-meaning Jedis.)
bad signal
WARREN ELLIS
So Laurenn leaves for San Diego
tomorrow, and Fraction and Kelly
Sue and everyone else in comics
except me the day after.
I would remind those with camphones
that I'd love shots from the con
floor for the website. Extra points
for funny stuff and stalking Laurenn,
Matt (in his I Don't Give A Fuck Suit)
and Kel. Stormtroopers are boring
unless they're all taking a piss or
something. Double for any of those
strange girls who sometimes show
up at cons wearing a "Warren Ellis'
Holy Slut Army" t-shirt -- Donna,
if you only knew how weird it is to
see those...
Anyway. Send your futurephonism
to warrene@aol.com, and hopefully
I can build a gallery of strangeness
on warrenellis.com during the con.
Ellis is a hoot, ain't he? I'm sure this is revenge for something. I'm not sure what. (This is for the bunnies, isn't it?) Anyway, if you do want to take pictures to send to Papa and you buy into this bonus points nonsense, here's a tip: best to introduce yourself first. Laurenn, in particular, is famous for her SDCC pugilistic exploits [You think I'm kidding; I'm not] and she will go all Sean Penn on your ass if you get sneaky. It's not me; it's her. She's crazy like that. I mention it only because I love you all deeply and sincerely and I care about your physical well-being. It has nothing whatsoever to do with my own vanity and fear of unflattering photos. Anyone who says otherwise is a filthy liar. Remember that.
*** Also? Friday is my birthday. Be nice.
*** Bad news: The Daruma Project and my chapbook both turned out to be more than Laurenn and I could handle on top of our regular work schedules, training, Laurenn's printer problems, etc. My thanks and apologizes to everyone who offered assistance -- especially Michael May. I still think it's a very good idea and we may try to do it again at some point, but we couldn't make it happen in time for for SDCC. We officially gave up the fight about two weeks ago and I've meant to post about it, but well, I'm disappointed and embarrassed to have over-reached and I've been loathe to confess. But now you know.
We do still plan on soliciting donations at SDCC of art/books/whatever for an online art auction benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and our Team in Training efforts. Expect to be hit up for that.
In case you're still looking to donate cash monies - here's a handy link:

*** Good news: Training is going well and fundraising is going GREAT. 18 mile bike ride last Saturday followed by a 2 mile run. Monday was a half mile swim. This morning we ran 2 miles and lifted weights. Here's hoping we can stick to our training schedules at the Prom.
*** Saw a preview copy of FIVE FISTS OF SCIENCE last night and EEE! I'm so excited. Fraction is sharing a booth with Rick Remender and Kieron Dwyer (BOOTH 2647) - stop by and say hello and ask to peak at the preview. Doitdoitdoit.
*** Laurenn will also be hawking postcard sets at the Con, don't forget. If you've already paid for your set, you can pick them up from her there. If you haven't, well, there's your chance. I told her I thought she could sell 50 sets while she was there. Help prove me right on this, okay?
*** Fall 2005 Couture Shows are up on Style.com if you want to peruse/praise/mock. Laurenn, Amy Elz, Casey and I have a semi-related project to launch, oh, probably a week or two after San Diego, if I had to guess...? Stay tuned.
*** I'm off to run some last minute errands. More later.

In Memorium: Keith Alexander

I'm not sure what to say. I met Keith Alexander when I interviewed him for Smile and Act Nice about a million years ago. We stayed in touch, hung out, became friends. The last time I saw him was in New York before I moved; I met him for tea at the New School where he was teaching. The last time I spoke to him was over e-mail a few weeks ago. We talked about my bike.
My understanding is that in lieu of flowers, the family is asking donations be made in Keith's name to The Lance Armstrong Foundation.
Xeni had some lovely things to say here.

Dead Wet Girls
Listen to Ghosts, Chills and 'Dark Water' from Japan by Neda Ulaby.
As Neda Ulaby reports, horror films are becoming one of Asia's common exports: at least a half-dozen more remakes are on the way, and the originals have American fans who seek out "J-horror" on video. The novels of Suzuki, who is considered the Japanese Stephen King, have been one source of material. The 2003 Japanese film Ju-On is another; the American version was released last year as The Grudge.
(There's an old Miike story linked at the bottom...)

How to Stick to Your Diet While on Vacation
How to Stick to Your Diet While on Vacation: "A group of researchers from New Orleans have developed 10 tips for not blowing your diet while you're on vacation, according to a new article on www.msnbc.msn.com.
If you're eating out, for instance, it pays to understand menu terms. Avoid descriptors such as fried, buttery, au gratin, sauteed, creamy, or breaded, the article says.
Two other proven tips: if you fall off your diet, just get back on with the next meal. Also, plan for as much physical activity as possible to offset the calorie imbalance, the article says.

Initial D Movie
'Star Wars' Overshadowed by Japanese Comic
By MIN LEE, Associated Press Writer
HONG KONG - Darth Vader, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are feeling the heat at the box office from an unusual rival — a movie based on a Japanese comic book, directed by Hong Kongers and starring a Taiwanese pop star making his debut in the movies.
"Initial D," the story of a young street car racer, has stunned "Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith" and the action thriller "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," starring Jolie and Pitt, at the Hong Kong box office.
The movie grossed $3.6 million over 10 days as of last weekend. By comparison, the latest Star Wars installment has made just $2.4 million over 46 days. "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" fared better, earning $2.8 million in 25 days.
More in link. (Thanks, Eric.)

Off to the Gym

TOTAL DONATIONS COLLECTED: $2,465
GOAL: $3,700
Saturday we rode 18 miles at 6am.
...
Okay, 6:15 am. We were late. REGARDLESS, it was both frustrating and amazing.
Now, we're off to the gym to swim a quarter mile and lift weights.
If you haven't donated yet and you plan to, no need to wait! The suspense is over-rated, I promise.
(Good news, bad news: the good news is that I've passed the half-way mark and signed the re-commitment papers. The bad news is that I'm now personally responsible for my fundraising goal. That means whatever I don't raise, I have to pitch in myself. As you may be able to imagine, I've already chipped in quite a bit and while I expect to chip in more - I don't have an extra $1,000.00 gathering dust on the sofa. So. I'm just sayin'. Leaps of faith and all that.)

Just sayin.
