Giraffe Dream

1.
I had the most wonderful dream last night. I dreamed that Fraction and I were at Grandma DeConnick's house and that we discovered a room in her home with a giant bathtub pit, and in the pit we found a lovely girl giraffe. As I was scrubbing her hooves -- the front two of which were amazingly soft -- she began to speak. She asked me to wash her hair.
In my dreams, animals often learn to talk.
2.
Before bed last night I was going over my webstats. I've had 47 referrals to kellysue.com this month from a Pakistani newspaper called The Daily Times. I can't figure out why. My best guess is that The Daily Times is someone's homepage and that person frequently checks this site. Who knows? As I poked around though, I happened upon the giraffe-zebra picture above (click on the pic to link to the article). I imagine it in some way prompted my dream.
3.
Early in our courtship, Fraction and I were wandering around SOHO and lower Broadway and we kept seeing images of giraffes in random places. I decided that every time we spotted one, I should get a kiss. Shortly thereafter we happened upon a Peter Beard exhibit, focusing on his years in Africa. We went inside.
4.
I'm listening to the radio right now, the local NPR affiliate KCUR. When I sat down to write this, host Walt Bodine had a few doctors on his show to discuss hypertension. As I was typing the word "giraffe" in paragraph 2 above, one of the doctors mentioned that though giraffes' hearts have to beat very hard to get blood all the way up to their brains, they suffer no adverse blood pressure effects.
I'm fond of synchronicity. I take it as a sign that I'm on the right track.

Oh God

Having consumed an heroic quantity of baked garlic, I am taken ill with the stinky farts.
It's so horrible as to be impressive.
I may have to sleep in the kitchen.

Love Dance of the Mechanical Animals
If you weren't lucky enough to read SHOUT magazine during the run of Maggie Estep's Mating Habits column, you're in luck now: Love Dance of the Mechanical Animals collects those columns and usually ships within 24 hours.
Also included are some of Maggie's old spoken word rants, journalistic portraits of Iggy Pop, Jerry Stahl and Chris Antley and dishy bits with appearances by yours truly.

The Art of Exotic Dancing for Everyday Women
Earlier tonight at the gym, my friend Meshel and I were talking about The Raj and various places we'd like to go and things we'd like to try. I want to take a spa vacation. Meshel, it seems, wants to learn to do a killer striptease. Okay, now suddenly I do, too.
Internet research has turned up this class.
Happily, there is a home study version here: The Art of Exotic Dancing for Everyday Women. I wonder if it's connected to Sheila Kelley at all.
Speaking of dancing, All That Jazz (the film that holds the dubious honor of being my all-time favorite) is out on DVD today. Rejoice, you miserable cads!
In other news, it's so hot here we're sleeping on our aerobed in the livingroom just to be nearer the A/C.
I'm leaving the comments link active on this post. Please endeavor not to be creepy.

A.W.A.D.

If you're not on the A Word A Day mailing list, you're absolutely missing out.
Today's entry, for example:
bumbershoot (BUM-buhr-shoot) noun
An umbrella.
[Blend of sounds of umbrella + parachute.]
"While the umbrella--or brolly or bumbershoot or parasol--has protected
people from sun or rain for some 4,000 years, there apparently are a few
rude umbrella handlers left on the planet."
Judy Hevrdejs; Wash That Gray Right Out of a Day; Chicago Tribune;
Apr 6, 2003.
"You probably take your bumbershoot for granted. It's just an umbrella:
a shaft, expandable ribs and waterproof fabric. But technology is slowly
improving that generations-old design."
Dru Sefton; What's Up With Umbrellas?; Fort-Worth Star-Telegram;
Jun 14, 2003.
This week's theme: portmanteau or blend words.

Leg Warmers

I have grown obsessed with the various new takes on Leg Warmers since Daily Candy spotlighted Dosty Stockings and purpleskirt versions a while back. (I have these, by the way, and they're fabulously styley.)
Today I have stumbled upon a DIY version on Knitty.
The ones in the pic above are over-the-top, I know, but they appeal to me in a Fruits kind of way. Too bad the site doesn't want to load.

We All Love The Salad King
Paul Newman Is Still HUD
By PAUL NEWMAN
OP-ED CONTRIBUTOR
New York Times
The Fox News Network is suing Al Franken, the political satirist, for using the phrase "fair and balanced" in the title of his new book. In claiming trademark violation, Fox sets a noble example for standing firm against whatever.
Unreliable sources report that the Fox suit has inspired Paul Newman, the actor, to file a similar suit in federal court against the Department of Housing and Urban Development, commonly called HUD. Mr. Newman claims piracy of personality and copycat infringement.

Himself
I just found out that a dear feline friend in New York, from whom I had the privilege of learning many life lessons over the past few years, passed away on Saturday. I understand that Friday night he was made comfortable on multiple bathmats (he loved bathmats) and his best friend curled up on the floor with him, singing his song.
I am grateful to have known him and I wish them both peace.

Book Crossing
I love this idea so much, I'm actually angry that I didn't think of it first.
(I believe that qualifies as a character flaw on my part. Regardless, I can't wait to play.)
Check it out: bookcrossing.com.

Worlds of Mike
Happy Birfday, Grandma DeConnick. I love you like a crazy person. Come visit.

I taught a bunch of kids to crochet today. I had a ball but it renewed my conviction that people who work with children all day deserve to be awarded medals and to have cathedrals built in their honor.
I did get to watch the kids dance, though. That was awesome. I made a little futurephone movie. I need to figure out how to post those.
For my contribution, I did the robot. It was 1982 all over again.

Mike's coming in for the weekend and I'm so excited I may pee.
We plan to hit Worlds of Fun tomorrow night, where Fraction intends to ride the Ripcord. By the time I post again, I may be a widow.
Ack! - Mike just called. He's an hour away. I have to run home and vacuum.
He's allergic to cats. This may not go well.

Foodie Blogs
So I was thinking I'd like to read some food-related blogs and turned up the following gems:
Obsessionwithfood.com
Tastingmenu.com
FoodBlog
Eat, Drink & Be Married
Butterpig
Saute Wednesday
The absolute prize of the batch, however is this:
The Julie/Julia Project
She's 26 days from having made every recipe in Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Vol. 1.
I'm ... awed. And more than a little jealous.
Happily, I got Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Vol. 1 from Meshel, my fabulous massage therapist friend, last month as a birthday gift.
I haven't started it yet, but, truly, I can't wait.
