LOTI Shirts
Kieron Dwyer has made some fantastic Last of the Independents workshirts and t-shirts available here.
The page says that the shirts will be available at SDCC (and they were) but my understanding is that you can order from him by e-mail now.

Both shirts are available in mens sizes from S-3XL. The black tees are $15 each, $18 for sizes 2XL and 3XL. The work shirts are $30 each. Shipping is $3 per shirt in the US or Canada, $5 per shirt for int'l.
As far as payment goes, I accept credit cards, money orders, personal checks, and paypal. For credit cards, you can email me your CC number and expiration. For check and MO's, please send to my PO Box # 591134, San Francisco, CA 94159-1134. For paypal, please use my account paypal@lcdcomic.com.
Be sure to include your shipping address in any order and please allow 3-4 weeks for your shirts to arrive. XL's are currently on back order for both types of shirt, so please allow extra time for those.

Book Journal II
Finished
Finished Entre Nous: A Woman's Guide to Finding Her Inner French Girl since last we spoke of these things and I'm embarrassed to say that I loved it. It was a gift from E. Bess and part of my "Lifestyle Guides for Women" collection (the crown jewel of which is a book called Having It All by Helen Gurley Brown that is nothing less than HORRIFIC) and meant to be mocked, not savored. Nope. I LOVED it. I'm thinking of putting together a list of the books and films the author recommends and setting about to consume them. I recommended Entre Nous to my mother, who found it similarly adorable.
Currently Consuming
Zoomed through about half of Savage Membrane: A Cal McDonald Mystery during my bath night before last (Lush lushes note: Dream Time bath melt -- nice enough; nothing I can't live without. However, Lush has revamped their site and it's worlds better). Niles is having a bit of a laugh at the hard-boiled detective fiction genre, but it's the kind of homage that's two parts ribbing and eight parts love. The follow-up to Savage Membrane is called Guns, Drugs, and Monsters, which has got to be one of the best titles since they started giving them out.
Books In Which I Have Lost My Way
Most of you know that I'm a huge fan of all things Maggie Estep. Hex: A Ruby Murphy Mystery was misplaced for MONTHS and I was half-convinced I'd left it in Houston during my grandfather's illness and was going to have to buy another one, but it just turned up. (You may have noticed it's been on the current reading sidebar for ages.) I'm looking forward to getting back into that, though I fear I may have to start over.
As I Lay Dying has twice been started and abandoned. It was, in fact, the book on top of the stack that Savage Membrane was placed in so long ago. I fear, despite Andy Ball's best efforts, I am not at the right place in my life for Faulkner just now. It's not even that I find him particularly inpenetrable (which was my fear) it's that I keep forgetting I'm reading the book! I put it down and literally forget I'm reading it. I feel vaguely guilty and thoroughly inadequate, but there you have it.
The Art of Fiction has been my gym reading and as SDCC and my birthday events conspired to keep my away from the gym for the last week and half, it's been languishing in my starter bag, unattended. I'm returning to the gym this afternoon so I expect to pick it back up.

RIP Pretty Blouse
Note to self: delicate blouses should not be dropped off for laundering. They should be handwashed in the sink with love and care and a gentle detergent, lest they return to you clean, but ripped nearly in two. (And not on a seam, either. Le sigh.)
Goodbye, Pretty Sheer Kimono Blouse. I'd hoped we'd stay together through the fall.

Fruits Basket
The shoujo (click link for manga glossary) title that I mentioned a few weeks back had finally been announced by Tokyopop. It's called "Fruits Basket" and I believe it hits shelves in November. (Tokyopop announced it before SDCC, bu it's not up on their site yet.
The story is that of an orphan girl who's been taken in by the family of the handsomest and most mysterious boy in school. The whole Souma household is full of surprises -- not the least of which their tendency to transform into animals from the Chinese zodiac when embraced by a member of the opposite sex. As it happens, our orphan girl, Tohru, is big on embraces.
It's a situational comedy, sweet without being cloying, fun to read and adapt.

Free preview here.
Peter is a real prince of a human being and he's put together a fun read for horror fans. The bonus essay alone is worth the $8.95 cover price.
It's a beautiful book. Horrific, but lovely.

Research Assistance - Roleplaying Games
Can someone give me the basics of how roleplaying games work? If I were writing a story about someone designing a roleplaying game, what's the most likely basic structure my character would use?
A site link with roleplaying terms defined (a glossary of some sort) would be swell, too.

Home safe and relatively sound. Wish I could say the same for my laptop. (I've mysteriously started dropping things. Dropped my water bottle, dropped my laptop twice, dropped my Chinese food ... I'm having problems that involve dropping.)
I have three billion e-mails to answer and half as many thank you notes to write. I am daunted.
Quick SDCC thoughts:
- Neil Gaiman becomes successively more brilliant every time he puts pen to paper;
- He also has the best fans in comics;
- Laurenn McCubbin is my new fun buddy and I want to buy us matching necklaces declaring as much;
- Highwater Books;
- Megan Thomas Bradner;
- San Diego is beautiful. Between visits, I forget how lovely the West Coast can be;
- Greg Rucka and Jeff Parker have the luckiest two babies in the world;
- Jamar;
- apparently the kids dig tiny buttons;
- "there's your boyfriend" really is the joke that never gets old;
- it's difficult to get a good meal anywhere near the convention center;
- Peter and Grace are as gracious as they are good-looking;
- Hand. Sanitizer;
- People will apparently buy space suits, even though they are unlikely to be invited to a party in space;
- Rory Root knows everything there is to know about comics;
- Epoxy and 1 Up;
- My husband kicks ass;
- A long-haired chihuahua named Lulu can cause me to daydream about dog-knapping;
- I wish we'd had time to sit and chat with Antony and Marcia more intimately;
- Ditto Dan Curtis Johnson and Carmel;
- Charlie Chu is a natural born leader; and
- I am convinced that Han Q. Duong somehow owes me.

The Pits
Okay, here's a tip: if you're, say, fond of cherries and you have about a two and a half pound bag of the fresh fruits, do not -- DO NOT -- eat half of said bag in one sitting and swallow the pits.
You'd think this would provide roughage, if anything, right?
Nope. Apparently it will clog your pipes such that the almost-muscular belly you've been working for so diligently over the last two months with nightly crunches and roman chair leg lifts will distend so severly you'll appear four months pregnant. You will have such horrible and painful gas that you will be forced to ask your husband to get off the couch and sit on the other side of the room so that your stench does not offend.
You will devour laxatives like M&Ms and no matter how cute your new BCBG black pumps, you will not -- will NOT -- feel pretty.
Do not then run searches on "eating cherry pits" on the internet. For you will learn that cherry pits contain cyanide. CYANIDE. You know, what like kills spys instantly? CY-AN-IDE. And you just ate a handful of natures little packages of the stuff and it's parked in your tummy and IT WON'T COME OUT.
So then you'll find yourself on the phone at two o'clock in the morning with the Poison Control Center, writing down the symptoms of cyanide poisoning and explaining very earnestly to your husband that you do not want to die yet and most importantly you do not want to die in such a stupid and embarrassing manner.
The nice woman at Poison Control will ask you how many pits you ate and a few other questions and tell you not to do it again. She'll inform you that unless the cherry pits were opened -- which is very difficult to do -- they will probably pass through your system without poisoning you. You might want to eat an apple (?!) or take a laxative, she will suggest. She will take your phone number just in case.
Just in case of what, you will not be sure.

Book Journal
Finally finished The Professor and the Madman: a Tale of Murder, Insanity and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary this morning. Highly recommended, though the last third had me wincing both with pity and ... what? Horror, I guess. That book about the serial killer at the World's Fair would be a great follow up. White ... White something ... ? I'll have to ask Xtop.
Finished Fat Land night before last, I think? Wow. High fructose corn syrup is the blood of the devil.
Wrapped up Harry Potter: The Order of the Phoenix the day after Matt got back from San Francisco, whenever that was. Loved it. Harry's 15 and pretty unpleasant to be around. That's about how I remember 15.
Comics this week: Hollywood Bau, Pop Gun War (Oh! My! God! So beautiful, this book.) and Soirs de Paris.
For research, I checked out books by my favorite children's authors and read or reread them:

Hector Casanova
He once told my husband, "My name is Hector Casanova and you're just going to have to come to terms with that."
He makes things like this. This makes me want to sit on the floor in front of it, hugging my knees and staring until I fall inside.
I wish Hector Casanova were a perfume. If he were, he'd smell like running through a palazzo with your arms widespread, scaring the tourists and the pigeons.
