This may be old news, but try chopping the dates really small to get the flavor and distribution throughout.

Although I don't know if this would help the point count, you might consider other dried fruits. Each would affect the taste in a substantial manner, but some that come to mind are cranberries (nice tartness?), pineapple (too sweet maybe?), apples (in fact, dried apples might soak up some additional moisture) or papaya (maybe not...might be too mushy texture in the end).

I want to monkey with this recipe now.

Oh, I love agave nectar! We use it at home now instead of pancake syrup and use it in tea & on toast in place of honey. Apparently it has an incredibly low impact on the glycemic index.

Honey's not safe for kids under 1? Is it an immune-system thing or the trickery of bees?

my MIL likes this one a lot. I have only used it once. But It says you can substitute 1/4 to add nutritional right on the site.
http://www.bobsredmill.com/catalog/index.php?action=showdetails&product_ID=386
there is this mixed one that is at most grocery stores that maybe like 1/4 cup could help with fiber
http://www.bobsredmill.com/catalog/index.php?action=showdetails&product_ID=199
and this one I ADORE but you have to go to a health food store for it. Its HIGH in fiber like crazy high

if you substituted some of the flour for a GF flour like garfava you could up the fiber and bring the points down. Just an idea. Cause I too suffer from the "how can I make it less points?"
